I think a lot about this topic, was surprised and proud to see you included me in this post. Suffice to say that because the click-through-rate is higher on LinkedIn to external sites like Substack, doing LinkedIn Posts well is a huge benefit for Substack Writers looking for high-quality traffic and the SEO boost that LinkedIn's domain provides.
Many of the fastest growing Substack Newsletters do it due to referral traffic from LinkedIn. Since the audience tends to be older and more senior in their careers they are also more likely to convert into paid subscribers as a whole. This means that LinkedIn traffic tends to be of higher value than Twitter, Reddit, Hacker News and other places for technology and business Newsletters.
I suggest you search Substack authors you like on LinkedIn. They are creating incredible posts to drive traffic. People like me who have Newsletters on LinkedIn, create a call-to-action to our substack in the Newsletter. Building lists and Newsletters on other platforms and pointing them to your Substack is a common strategy. This is because you want to grow the list that you own. Later you can merge said lists if they represent the same Newsletter and same intended audience. This benefits your business model. So it's not just social media that is effective but actually tapping into multiple recommendation based ecosystems.
Hi Michael - I took the author's advice and added substack to my linkedin page but it just shows a link to 'personal webpage' not a nice substack logo like yours.
I can't copy an image of it here to show you but would prefer the logo appearance. Can you tell me how you did this because following the instructions above just hasn't worked.
Thanks for sharing this helpful tip! I've noticed that publishing articles on Substack tends to generate more engagement on LinkedIn than sharing YouTube videos. It's also a great way to monitor the conversion rate of my posts, as likes don't always equate to actual readership. Your insight has been valuable in helping me track the success of my content. Thank you for sharing!
I'd add that while LinkedIn is a great source for many of us, your posts will get much more visibility if you spend time each week playing the LinkedIn game. That is, interact with other people's posts.
You don't need to turn yourself into a social media marketer, but don't expect a post into the void to do anything on its own.
With reference to some of my recent articles on Substack, I have noticed that LinkedIn is preventing substack website site previews from loading on LinkedIn posts.
Hi. Does anyone know if the LinkedIn algorithm demotes or 'punishes' your post in any way when you include a link to the article that takes users off the platform and over to Substack?
I'm not sure if you mention that in order to have your Substack linked IN your profile, like Michael Spencer's, you need to have "creator mode" turned on. Hope this helps someone!
Thanks for this Linda. Good reminder to make sure my links to Substack were all in place. I have brought over a small number of people from my LinkedIn, just by sharing my Substack posts there in my feed. I could probably do more, will have to think about that...
“At Substack, we don't think social media algorithms should decide who sees your work. Instead, we believe writers should be empowered to control the relationship with their readers.”
hi. Great tips! I write in Brazilian Portuguese. The strategy has worked really well in the first months, but recently the "Publish" button on my linkedin news has misteriously disappeared. I can't post over there anymore. And that's very weird... it happened with anyone here too? Thanks, I'm investigating #linkedingate

Been wondering if this works! Excited to see some great examples!

ha! that's a question I had indeed!
I reached this via a Notes thread, and it's so useful when you're trying to combine the best of both Substack & LinkedIn. Thanks Linda!

“At Substack, we don't think social media algorithms should decide who sees your work. Instead, we believe writers should be empowered to control the relationship with their readers.”
Can't agree more!
I am happy I found this post since taking control of my 6000 Linkedin contacts through Substack is exactly what I intend to do!
Many thanks for this insightful post.

Great article Linda and thanks for re-stacking a Note of mine.
